The Longing ~ Sea Fever

'Sea-Fever' by John Masefield is one of Margaret's favourite poems as it is mine. It is a work of art, pulling together imagery, rhythm and complex figures of speech, that truly suggests an adventurous sail on the ocean.

l would love to go on this tall ship sailing holiday around Britain, Ireland and Norway!
Please link HERE to see the video/nice music too :)
"Sea-Fever"

I must down to the seas again, to the lonely sea and the sky,
And all I ask is a tall ship and a star to steer her by,
And the wheel's kick and the wind's song and the white sail's shaking,
And a grey mist on the sea's face, and a grey dawn breaking.

I must down to the seas again, for the call of the running tide
Is a wild call and a clear call that may not be denied;
And all I ask is a windy day with the white clouds flying,
And the flung spray and the blown spume, and the sea-gulls crying.

I must down to the seas again, to the vagrant gypsy life,
To the gull's way and the whale's way where the wind's like a whetted knife;
And all I ask is a merry yarn from a laughing fellow-rover
And quiet sleep and a sweet dream when the long trick's over.

By John Masefield (1878-1967).
(English Poet Laureate, 1930-1967.)

Good on Herself!
The poet of my childhood. Actually although he served at sea he didn't like it much. It's sad he is mostly known for sea poems like Sea Fever and Christmas Eve at Sea. He was also a good novelist and if you have never read his children's book 'The Box of Delights' you have seriously missed out. Rush out today without delay and buy a copy.

Hello dear Horizon!! Maybe Blogger will let me comment today instead of eating them?? I've tried the last couple of days and had to give up! I'm going to win this war, though, and get my comment to post!!!! lol I have always had a fascination with tall ships and my favourite books to read were always historicals that involved tall ships and pirates! hehe I so enjoyed hearing you read the poem, very well done! You have such a sweet voice and love your accent:-) I hope you've stayed safe from those winds...they can be more damaging and scarier than anything else! My brothers in British Columbia have said they've been having those terrible winds and trees have been uprooted everywhere! Hugs xoxo

Hi Horizon ~~ Yhat was a real treat -
thank you so much. I learnt Sea Fever in 1947 when for English, we actually had a lovely English lady who read it to us. But I loved your Scottish accent as
I had an Scottish boarder here for awhile and I loved to listen to his voice. Thanks for your visit, glad you liked the jokes and marriage rules.
Take care, dear Sarah, and get some rest, Love, Merle.

I really enjoyed the poem. My husband and I are quite fond of Windjammer Barefoot Cruises and this will be a lovely addition to my scrapbooks.

Hi, I did love that reading, that is how "Sea Fever" should sound. I have some very dear friends , as well as my deceased mother in law had that beautiful lilting accent.
Cheers Margaret
