Firstly l would like to note that l am having a bad time with Blogger- buttons are not working properly and l am very frustrated. l have been trying to leave comments on your blogs but can't. I am checking in with you all and wanted you to know.
We have several old newspapers at home. This advertisment (below) came from 'The Daily Telegraph' dated December 11th, 1936. The headline was about the abdication of King Edward VIII.
The recommended gift for Christmas was a pack of cigarettes. Certainly before the days of health warnings, it wasn't only socially acceptable - it was the 'thing to do'.
Double click on the image for easier reading :)
This next advertisment is from the same newspaper. It just goes to show you that although people smoked they were still genuinely concerned about 'healthy air'. "The healthiest heat on tap" it reads. I guess their carbon monoxide detectors were little yellow Canaries?
Read about Carbon Monoxide Awareness HERE.
A life saving device for your family- carbon monoxide detectors should be a MUST HAVE, especially if you have a gas boiler, gas appliances or gas fire. It is a silent killer, you can't smell or see it. Most people have fire detectors so please do yourself and your family a favour this December and go buy one- they are inexpensive and having one is just common sense.
I don't mean to sound like a Miss Jean Brody but l thing especially at this time of the year when we are heating up our homes for the winter it should be noted.

Loved seeing the old newspapers. I have several and it's amazing how thought processes have changed.
Excellent warning on the carbon monoxide detectors...
And yes, Blogger is being it's beasty self!!
xoxox
Interesting old papers and I had to laugh about cigarettes. It's just crazy what a witch hunting is going on ! Now when you just look at a cigarette and your neighbour caughs because of the monoxide coming out of a truck, then it's your fault because you looked at the cigarette !
Google tries by all means to get us "old" bloggers over to Beta, because they bought Blogger (as I have been told) now what happens if you are an "old" Blogger and you wish to comment on a Beta Blog it doesn't work. So you have to comment either "anonymous" or "other" then it works. Should at least !
You'll be glad to know that we have one!! and two smoke detectors...one up and one below stairs...
:-D
Blogger is such a beast!!
:-D
Everyone has problems with beta blogger in the moment! So bad.
I wish you a nice weekend and may be some snow.

The whole world has been having problems with comments.
Just came back across your comment on granny and don't remember thanking you.
So, thank you. All the kindness helps so much.
I know what you mean about leaving comments on Blogger which is the main reason why I've switched Beta Blogger in the hope it might be more reliable. Talking of health and health warnings, and I don't know how true it is as I never watch or read any news but someone has told me that they are going to put more tax on bigger clothes to fund a fat help line! LIke I say I don't know how true it is but it wouldn't surprise me at all. If they could figure out a way of doing it they would bring in a crap tax too. Although thinking about it perhaps not as its the people making the rules that deposit most of the crap these days. Now lets hope this comment goes through ok! NO! Thats 2 failures - GRRR! I'll try again.
Oh wow! Third time lucky - YIPPEE!!!!
Hello, I have just caught up with your posts which I had not kept up with, lovely photos and very enjoyable reading. Thank you for sharing, thanks also for visiting my site as it means such a lot to me.
Cheers Margaret

I've also had trouble leaving comments,I wish you and your family a"MERRY CHRITMAS"
I've found since many of the blogs I visit on Blogspot have gone Beta I can hardly ever leave a comment now on the first try. I've been trying to comment on my friend Judy's blog for two days now without success...luckily I have her email addy, ha! Here's hoping this one comes thru on yours, lovely lady. Argghhhh...hanging Christmas cards?!? We've had so much going on lately I haven't even taken mine out of the boxes yet. EEeeeeeeeek! ((HUG)) Hitting the "Login & Publish" button with HIGH HOPES.....
It's so fuuny those days cigarettes are deemed as cool gift idea! How the world change..
I love seeing old newspaper articles like that! I was surprised that cigarettes were so popular as a gift back then...can you just picture giving someone a pack of cigarettes now as a gift...they would say, "what, you trying to kill me?"! lol We have a carbon monoxide detector as well as 2 smoke detectors...it's the law to have them here. Horizon, open up a Google account, it's your email and a password which you can then use to comment on Beta Blogs. That's what I did and it works:-) Hugs xoxo
Old newspapers are so interesting. Can't imagine giving someone a pack of cigarettes as a present nowadays.
I've tried many times to change to Beta but can't do so YET. I've taken to commenting anonymously and just adding my name at the bottom of the post.
Hi Horizon
Very interesting looking back at old newspapers just to see the ads and prices.

It's so much fun seeing the old newspaper ad's. It's amazing that it was only in 1936 that the Daily Telegraph headline featured an abdication of King Edward VIII...wow!
Nice reminder about carbon monoxide poisening. It is wonderful that they have detectors now. My hubby and like 7 or 8 of his brothers and sister's barely made it out of the house with the help of their Mother. The only way she knew something was wrong was they wouldn't wake up.
Have a Merry Christmas with you wonderful family! :)
I think I'm right in saying that wood burning stoves can create the threat of carbon monoxide too, it doesn't have to be just gas.
